Class 4A

Gary West Side Holds On In A Thriller

It took Gary West Side 30 years to get back to a state championship game and the Cougars made up for lost time holding on for a thrilling 58-55 victory over defending 4A champion Pike on Saturday, March 23, 2002 at Conseco Fieldhousein Indianapolis.

West Side made the state championship game in 1972 at Assembly Hall in Bloomington but fell to Connersville, 80-63, but the 2002 edition of the Cougars would not be denied this time.

It was the seventh IHSAA state championship for Gary West Side, but the first in a sport other than track and field. It also was the first basketball state title for a Gary school since Roosevelt won the state title in 1991.

Despite holding a sizeable lead most of the game, the unranked Cougars had to hold off (Class 4A) second-ranked Pike in the late going.

Gary West Side held its biggest lead of 19 points on two occasions in the third period before Pike made its move in the fourth. Down 48-33 with 6:57 to go in the game, Pike turned up the defensive pressure forcing turnovers which spurred a 14-0 run that got the Red Devils back in the game.

West Side led 50-49 with to go before senior guard Dennis Gates hit both free throws on two consecutive trips down the court for a 54-49 cushion. After Pike junior Justin Cage hit the second of two free throws, classmate David Barlow nailed a three-pointer to pull within one at 54-53 with :38 seconds left.

The Cougars then got a tip in by senior Chris Hunter after two consecutive offensive rebounds for a 56-53 advantage with :23 seconds remaining. Following a timeout with :10.9 left, junior center Parnell Smith rebounded and put back a missed three pointer by junior guard Darren Yates to cut the lead to one, but Brandon Cameron, one of West Sides four senior guards, sealed the game by hitting both free throws with :0.7 left for the final margin.

Cameron led all scorers with 17 points. Hunter scored 14 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. As a team,West Side pulled down a Class 4A game record 43 rebounds. Cage led Pike with 13 points, followed by Smith with 12 and Barlow with 10.

The Cougars (23-4) were coached by third-year leader John Boyd. The Red Devils of first year coach Larry Bullington finished 24-4 after losing their first game in 14 outings.

Christopher Hunter of West SideHigh School in Gary was selected as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award in Class 4A Boys Basketball by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

The award, named in honor of the IHSAAs first commissioner, who served the association from 1929 to 1944, is presented to a senior in each classification who best displays mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. The student also must be nominated by his principal and coach.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to West SideHigh School in Gary in the name of Chris Hunter.

Class 3A

Robbins Record 38 Lifts Delta To State Championship

Kelly Robbins scored a Class 3A game record 38 points to power unranked Delta to a 65-54 triumph over Harding for its first basketball state championship.

Robbins, a 6-3 senior forward who averaged 19.6 points per game, made 10 of his 20 attempts from the field, including three three-pointers, and connected on all 15 free throws. Robbins 38-point effort was the eighth-best output in the 92-year history of the state finals.

The Eagles finished as the state runner-up in 1997, their only other appearance in the state finals. This championship also marked the second of the year for the Muncie-area school, which captured the Class 3A volleyball title and finished as the runner-up in Class 4A football in November. It was the schools seventh state championship in all sports.

Seniors Brad Wilson and Ryan Rhoades chipped in 11 and 10 points respectively for Delta.

(Class 3A) Fourth-ranked Harding, last years Class 2A state champ, jumped out to a 6-0 lead right off the bat, but Delta grabbed the lead for good in early in the second period on a three-pointer by Kelly Robbins that put the Eagles on top 19-16. They never trailed again.

Delta was able to extend the lead to seven points late in the third but could never put away Harding for good until hitting its free throws at the end. Delta led 52-49 before the Eagles were sent to the line and made 13 of its 14 free throws over the last of the game. Delta set a Class 3A team record for free throw percentage (.955) by connecting on 21 of 22 from the stripe.

Seniors Adrian Greene and Courtney Reese led Harding with 15 points each and classmate David Tubbs added 13.

Delta, guided by 10thyear head coach Paul Keller, finished a 22-6 campaign. Harding finished its season 23-5 under 12th year head coach Al Gooden.

Brian Wright of DeltaHigh School was selected as the recipient of the Arthur L. TresterMental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee. Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to DeltaHigh School in the name of Brian Wright.

Class 2A

Speedway Takes Checkered Flag

Speedway jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in a 62-48 victory over Bluffton for the Class 2A state championship.

Speedway, located in the shadows of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, captured the first IHSAA state championship in any sport in school history. The Sparkplugs had finished as the state runner-up in Class 2A baseball last June.

The Sparkplugs led 14-6 after the first period, held a 27-21 advantage at the half and led 45-34 at the end of the third period.

It was a game of streaks as every time Bluffton would make a run to close its deficit, Speedway would go on a run of its own ballooningits lead once more.

Speedway held its largest lead of 13 points at 35-22 with 5:38 remaining in the third, but Bluffton gradually chipped away and cut it to four with 3:04 left in the game on senior guard Kaine Kinseys three-pointer that made it 49-45. But that was as close as they would get as Speedway put the game away at the free throw line converting 11 of 16 free throws down the stretch.

Junior guard Chris West ledSpeedway with 23 points, while senior forward J.D. Clampitt finished with 18 and a game-best 14 rebounds. Kinsey led all scorers with 24 points and 10 boards. Senior forward Bryan Steffen added 11 points for the Tigers.

Coached by Trent Lehman, Speedway finished the season 22-4 in its first trip to this level of the tournament. Coach Wayne Barker led Bluffton to its seventh state finals appearance but first since 1932. The Tigers finished 24-4.

Mark Gonzales of SpeedwayHigh School was selected as the recipient of the Arthur L. TresterMental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee. Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to SpeedwayHigh School in the name of Gonzales.

Hot-Shooting Rossville Crowned In Class A

Surviving a big second half rally, Rossville claimed its first state championship in boys basketball with a 79-68 victory over Barr-Reeve in the Class A state championship game on Saturday (March 23) at Conseco Fieldhousein Indianapolis.

It was the second state championship in school history after the baseball team captured the Class Atitle in 1999-00.

Rossville senior Brock Graves shared game honors with Barr-Reeve junior Zane Bowman with 37 points each, a Class A record which bettered the 35 point output by Unions (Dugger) Brody Boyd in 2000. Graves averaged 16.5 points this year while Bowman averaged 13.1.

(Class A) Second-ranked Rossville (23-4) finished the game shooting .556 (25-54) but were scorching the nets in the first half. The Hornets connected on their first three shots and led 10-3 early on. They finished the half connecting on 18 of their 29 field goal attempts, including five of seven from three-point range, to take a 45-26 lead. The 45 points scored set the Class A record for most points in a half. Graves made nine of his 10 shots in the first half and finished 16-for-20 for a Class A record .800 field goal percentage.

But what looked like a possible blowout, took a 180-degree turn in the third period when Barr-Reeve scored the first 13 points of the second half. The Vikings, making their first appearance in the state finals, cut the lead to three with to go in the third when Bowman was fouled as he hit a jumper. He canned the foul shot to complete the three-point play and cut the lead to 49-46. Barr-Reeve trimmed the lead to two on a pair of occasions at 55-53 and 57-55 early in the fourth before Rossville went on a 8-0 run that put the game away. Barr-Reeve never got closer than eight points the rest of the game.

Barr-Reeve shot near 50 percent in the second half on 12-for-25 field goals and hit all nine free throws to get back in it.

Senior Justin Chittick added 24 points for Rossville and senior Darren Wilcher hit for 15 points in support of Barr-Reeve, which had its 12-game winning streak snapped.

Rossville, coached by Jeff Henley, finished the year 23-4. Barr-Reeve, third-ranked in Class A and coached by Bryan Hughes, ended a 24-5 season.

Troy Roberson of Rossville High School was selected as the recipient of the Arthur L. TresterAward for Mental Attitude for Class A Boys Basketball by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee. Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to RossvilleHigh School in the name of Roberson.
